LET’S HAVE A COFFEE?

Coffee is very important to me because it’s a beverage that has been with me from a very young age, when I used to help my father’s family take care of the property’s harvest.

I remember my paternal grandfather getting up every day at 3 in the morning to prepare the first coffee of the day for the family consumption, using a handmade wood stove. Incomparable smell and flavour!

In my 22 years of profession, I have always been connected to the coffee cultivation, of different state and private entities, and in the many different parts of the golden grain agroindustry chain.

Today, I like to visit coffee shops in my country and abroad to taste different mixes of coffee from different origins, processed and prepared with different methods.

To me, coffee is an entire experience I like to share!

IMPORTANCE

Coffee is the second most consumed beverage in the world, after water. Curiously, it is also only behind oil in terms of international trade figures, with 25 million farmers in more than 50 countries involved in its production. In addition, an estimated 3 billion cups of coffee are drank on a daily basis worldwide.

ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The word coffee means “grain wine” from the Arabic “qahhwat al-bun.” The world’s first coffee was discovered during the sixth century, in Ethiopia.

An Ethiopian legend tells the story of a shepherd named Kaldi who noticed his goats were restless and very active when they ate red cherries from a tree. Filled with curiosity, he decided to take the cherries to a monk in a neighbouring temple, who made an infusion for his monks. The infusion had a bad taste; however, noticing that drinking the infusion caused the same “symptoms” seen in the goats, he decided to improve its taste by drying and roasting them. He found out that the beverage actually helped not to fall asleep during the night prayers. Around 1500, the Emir Khair Bey, advised by a group of physicians and legal experts, prohibited coffee, considering that it intoxicated people and that for that reason it was against the rules of the Koran. Nonetheless, the decree was revoked a few years later.

LATIN AMERICA

Region known for well-balanced coffee, with walnut or cocoa flavour with medium body and clean finishing.

63% of the coffee consumed in the world is produced in the Americas, most of which is cultivated in Brazil, which produces 40% of the world’s supply.

NICARAGUA

Its coffee stands out for its high quality, elegance and refinement, with notes of chocolate and mild spices, with flavours such as lemon, blackberry and flowers, which are very hard to come by in the world.

CURIOSITY

Swim in coffee? Yes, you can! But to do that you will have to travel to Japan, since that is where the Yunessun Spa Resort is, which, among its attractions, has pools where guests can bathe in red wine, coffee and green tea. This unique establishment is located in the city of Hakone, exactly 6 kilometres away from the Ōwakudani volcanic valley and 10 kilometres away from Lake Ashi. The customer must pay approximately 30 dollars to get in the place.

Next time we meet, let’s have a coffee!

good coffee!

Diana Mejia Arriaga – Marketing Manager Cemcol, Honduras
Paul Strohm, Sales Director for the Americas and the Caribbean

“To me, coffee is much more than a daily habit. It’s a moment of my own to focus, appreciate and a moment of pleasure. I love the aroma, flavor and its color. By the way as far as its color, I prefer intense coffee, which you cannot see the bottom of the cup. I have coffee every day; otherwise my day simply doesn’t start entirely. On average I probably drink half a liter of coffee per day. I really appreciate it!”

To your health, colleagues!

There’s a story behind everything, this picture’s story is:

“Sharing coffee with our collaborator Aura, who assists STIHL customers in the sales room of Comeca, in the city of Guatemala. On the table, there are three acknowledgements given to us by the National Association of Coffee, ANACAFÉ, for our joint efforts in different activities, working for the coffee in Guatemala.”

Breakfast of the Inmeq team, headed towards a city in the north-west of Ecuador “La Concordia”

“For us, coffee is important in our daily routine, since it accompanies us to enjoy our delicious gastronomy, like green plantains or a famous regional dish, the tigrillo from the Ecuadorian coast! Coffee gives taste to our breakfasts and fills us with happiness to go to work!”

“SP 20 and its three rake options were developed with cutting-edge technology to be used to harvest coffee, ensuring high productivity, breaking only a few branches.”

Paulo Serpe, Market Specialist

When we talk about coffee cultivation, SP 20 quickly stands out in STIHL’s portfolio. Used in the harvest, this product has innovative design and is very practical to use with the multi-function tools KA 85 R or KA 120 R.

“It’s a solution developed with the highest technology, seeking to facilitate the routine of the producers of a fruit that is loved worldwide,” says the Market Specialist Paulo Serpe.

He highlights its attributes such as the machine’s customization capacity with three options to adjust the tube according to the height of the coffee tree, in addition to the three types of rakes for the different characteristics of each Arabica coffee plant (see box). With that, the customer assembles his own harvester tool according to his needs.

Another benefit that deserves to be highlighted is the excellent productivity due to the combination of opening amplitude and rake vibration frequency.

High durability and easy maintenance also draw the attention. The equipment does not require any breaks for lubrication during the harvesting period, relies on innovative design and easy access to internal parts.

Attributes
3 types of rakes for different types of plants

Benefits
Optimized productivity
High durability and low maintenance

The harvester tool SP 20 relies on three options of highly resistant rakes:

Rake WR
■ Six fingers;
■ Universal model. Indicated for plants with branches of normal size and spacing.

Rake WR6-2
■ Six fingers misaligned;
Ideal for situations where the plants are dense, close together and with intertwined branches that make access to the fruits difficult.

Rake WR9
■ Nine fingers;
■ Very high productivity for long, dense branches with many fruits per plant.

“Coffee cultivation has several stages, and all of them rely on a STIHL solution.”

Paulo Serpe, Market Specialist

Fertilization in soil

Explanation: process of adding organic or chemical fertilizers to be incorporated in the soil. The nutrients are absorbed through the roots.

Indicated products: blowers BR to remove leaves and branches, allowing the fertilizer to be in direct contact with the soil thus making the fertilization process more efficient. Another option is the utilization of sprayers SR using only the blower.

Harvest

Explanation: most anticipated moment, when the fruits will be harvested for future sales. Harvest is indicated when the coffee has a very little percentage of green fruits, that is, 15% or less.

Indicated product: harvester tool SP 20 associated with the KombiEngine KA is the solution for this activity. In addition to delivering a more uniform harvest, it also delivers higher yield. It also eliminates the use of stairs and, when used correctly, breaks fewer branches and folds less leaves than manual harvesting. Then, the blowers BG are indicated to remove excess leaves and branches that fell during the harvest. They allow the use of smaller air flow in addition to having excellent handling mobility.

Pruning

Explanation: after the harvest, it is necessary to perform the maintenance pruning to cut the branches that have already produced coffee. Pruning prevents the waste of vitamins in weak parts of the tree, harming the fruit production. It is also important to eliminate dry, broken or forked branches, directing the nutrients to a healthy growth of the coffee plant.

Indicated products: for the most drastic pruning, it is indicated the use of the attachment HT associated with a multi-function KA. And for the growth pruning, known as skeleton cut pruning, the solutions are the attachment HL in a multi-function KA and the pruner HS, providing a cut without exposed fibres, which is an entry point for diseases.

Foliar fertilization

Explanation: agricultural technique that consists of the application of nutrients in a syrup consistency on the leaves so that, after the absorption, they can be carried to other parts of the plant.

Indicated products: manual sprayer SG 20 for focal application, very close to the leaves, and mistblowers SR 420 and SR 430, to provide spray drops of smaller diameter, reaching the most distant leaves.

Planting

Explanation: planting of coffee seedlings. After digging the soil, it is recommended to mix the earth with fertilizer.

Indicated products: soil digging must be done with the earth auger BT 131 using a specific auger to avoid mirroring, which prevents the development of the roots in the earth.

Weed Management

Explanation: activity to control soil temperature and humidity. In addition to maintaining a balanced and efficient irrigation, it prevents the growth of weeds that compete for nutrients with coffee plants.

Indicated products: it is recommended the use of implement FS in a multi-function KA. The options are nylon lines or metallic blades. The manual sprayer SG 20 also allows the application of agrochemicals suited for weed control with low impact in the coffee cultivation.

Cleaning of the soil

Explanation: alternative technique. It consists of removing the leaves and branches that are on the soil, making it easier to perform the harvest. Also used after the harvest to remove the grains that remained on the soil.

Indicated products: the blowers BR provide the ideal blowing power to clean the soil. With their power and air volume, the work can be done very fast and effortlessly.

Drastic pruning to renew the plant

Explanation: drastic pruning performed in the stem at a distance between 30 or 60 cm from the ground.

Indicated products: the chainsaws MS are ideal for the most demanding cutting tasks. As an alternate solution, the implement HT in multi-function KA can be used.

“Many producers are used to using manual equipment. It is necessary to do a gradual field work, showing our products and offering a test drive for them to actually see how much better it is to rely on portable motorized tools, from STIHL.”
Elisangela Correa, Sales promoter

In Brazil, the South region of Minas Gerais stands out as the main coffee producer, for its mountainous topography. The largest coffee cooperative of the world, Regional Cooperative of Coffee Producers from Guaxupé llc. (Cooxupé), works there, with a history of almost 90 years. It currently relies on more than 15 thousand members, of which 95% are small producers who live of family agriculture.

In the company for seven years, she says the work with the cooperative is extremely important to reach potential customers. “We are always paying close attention to opportunities, visiting producers who are cooperative members and breaking paradigms. Some of them had never even thought of using motorized solutions and now are extremely satisfied,” she stated.

Top 3 for a good performance with coffee producers

1. Quality
Reinforce the quality of the STIHL brand. The coffee harvest occurs only during a certain period of time and, if the equipment is not available in that moment, the producer cannot work. That is why there is nothing better than relying on world-class and low maintenance solutions.

2. Field work
The producer must see the product working. Make visits and demonstrations. Also take advantage to leave machines for a test drive. This way, the customer can see in practice the performance of STIHL solutions for the coffee market.

3. Warranty
With a two-year warranty, STIHL products draw the attention for their quality and after-sales service, relying on specialized technical assistance in STIHL dealerships. All these points must be highlighted.
