“Coffee cultivation has several stages, and all of them rely on a STIHL solution.”

Paulo Serpe, Market Specialist

Fertilization in soil

Explanation: process of adding organic or chemical fertilizers to be incorporated in the soil. The nutrients are absorbed through the roots.

Indicated products: blowers BR to remove leaves and branches, allowing the fertilizer to be in direct contact with the soil thus making the fertilization process more efficient. Another option is the utilization of sprayers SR using only the blower.

Harvest

Explanation: most anticipated moment, when the fruits will be harvested for future sales. Harvest is indicated when the coffee has a very little percentage of green fruits, that is, 15% or less.

Indicated product: harvester tool SP 20 associated with the KombiEngine KA is the solution for this activity. In addition to delivering a more uniform harvest, it also delivers higher yield. It also eliminates the use of stairs and, when used correctly, breaks fewer branches and folds less leaves than manual harvesting. Then, the blowers BG are indicated to remove excess leaves and branches that fell during the harvest. They allow the use of smaller air flow in addition to having excellent handling mobility.

Pruning

Explanation: after the harvest, it is necessary to perform the maintenance pruning to cut the branches that have already produced coffee. Pruning prevents the waste of vitamins in weak parts of the tree, harming the fruit production. It is also important to eliminate dry, broken or forked branches, directing the nutrients to a healthy growth of the coffee plant.

Indicated products: for the most drastic pruning, it is indicated the use of the attachment HT associated with a multi-function KA. And for the growth pruning, known as skeleton cut pruning, the solutions are the attachment HL in a multi-function KA and the pruner HS, providing a cut without exposed fibres, which is an entry point for diseases.

Foliar fertilization

Explanation: agricultural technique that consists of the application of nutrients in a syrup consistency on the leaves so that, after the absorption, they can be carried to other parts of the plant.

Indicated products: manual sprayer SG 20 for focal application, very close to the leaves, and mistblowers SR 420 and SR 430, to provide spray drops of smaller diameter, reaching the most distant leaves.

Planting

Explanation: planting of coffee seedlings. After digging the soil, it is recommended to mix the earth with fertilizer.

Indicated products: soil digging must be done with the earth auger BT 131 using a specific auger to avoid mirroring, which prevents the development of the roots in the earth.

Weed Management

Explanation: activity to control soil temperature and humidity. In addition to maintaining a balanced and efficient irrigation, it prevents the growth of weeds that compete for nutrients with coffee plants.

Indicated products: it is recommended the use of implement FS in a multi-function KA. The options are nylon lines or metallic blades. The manual sprayer SG 20 also allows the application of agrochemicals suited for weed control with low impact in the coffee cultivation.

Cleaning of the soil

Explanation: alternative technique. It consists of removing the leaves and branches that are on the soil, making it easier to perform the harvest. Also used after the harvest to remove the grains that remained on the soil.

Indicated products: the blowers BR provide the ideal blowing power to clean the soil. With their power and air volume, the work can be done very fast and effortlessly.

Drastic pruning to renew the plant

Explanation: drastic pruning performed in the stem at a distance between 30 or 60 cm from the ground.

Indicated products: the chainsaws MS are ideal for the most demanding cutting tasks. As an alternate solution, the implement HT in multi-function KA can be used.

“Proud of working on the field,” “Proud of keeping the city clean,” “Proud of being a STIHL distributor,” “Proud of my garden.” Sentences such as these are part of the new STIHL brand campaign, which seeks to strengthen the STIHL brand in all of its market segments.
“We want our brand to be the top of mind for potential clients in the segments of agriculture, forestry, professional and home gardening, and maintenance. We also want to reinforce the quality and service of STIHL distributors. The campaign contributes to increase brand awareness in the short term and to increase market share in the long term,” explains Sabine MacDonald, Marketing Manager for Latin America and the Caribbean.
The new campaign was developed by STIHL Colombia and is available to all importers and subsidiaries in Latin America and the Caribbean, free of charge. The advertising material are images of actual people – end customers of all segments proud of their work using STIHL products.
Before the release, it is essential to prepare a segment media plan for the radio, websites, social media, point of sale, among others. A consistent campaign in all advertising channels, used several times over a longer period of time, increases the possibility of reaching more clients and, thus, strengthens the brand.

THE NEW NORMAL

The worldwide pandemic has made people learn to live in a different way, giving more value to the simple things in life, such as freedom. It was necessary to ‘slow down’ in many ways. ‘We had all this readaptation, with shops working to reduced hours, severe restrictions on mobility both inside and outside the country, an extremely limited social life, as well as introduction of teleworking, were challenging to all. This can already be seen as a major conquest’, says Paul Strohm, the LATAM and Caribbean Sales Director, analysing the current situation.

FULL RECOVERY

In the company, the start of the year was marked by several meetings to set the plans of action to tackle the crisis that was already brewing on the horizon, of proportions unseen in the history of our company.
Once the initial impact of the first quarter had worn off, the markets where STIHL is present in Latin America and the Caribbean, especially in the sector of Agriculture and Gardening, started to show positive signs of live and recovery.

‘From there, we moved on to a new reality, never before witnessed by the Company: record turnovers and growing market share, amidst a world crisis. This means we can affirm that we have the best and most qualified distribution network, and also the best production structure when compared to our competitors. Last but not least, we have the most motivated and most competent people, fighting for the brand at the four corners of the globe. This is a really important conquest that deserves to be highlighted!’, Strohm acknowledges and celebrates.

Paul Strohm, Sales Director for LATAM and the Caribbean: Comments about the initial shock and the speedy recovery

SPEEDY PLANS

The Qualification Manager, Raul Kriedte, calls attention to the redesigning of the training processes, which now rely more on the facilities and advantages of distance learning (DL).

‘It was already our plan to expand and advance the online format, but the restrictions enforced by the Covid-19 pandemic accelerated this shift’, he says. The STIHL Training platform has received important updates, facilitating and speeding up the use thereof, both in English and Spanish.
Catering to the specific demands of importers and subsidiaries also moved forward at full throttle, within the digital environment. ‘Our contacts were more frequent than before, when the in-person mode was used’.

COMMUNICATION IN TIMES OF CRISIS

The development of a communication strategy in days of coronavirus has been very important during 2020. The different phases have helped with the publicity of STIHL, thereby strengthening the relationship between the brand and its clients.

Another highlight of this year was the launch of the new LATAM Marketing communication app, which allows safe, quick, and easy contact with all importers and subsidiaries in order to share best practices, publish new content, and offer tools for qualifying the markets even more.
“We are very happy with the advances we have made. I would specially like to thank all those who have made an effort, day in and day out, to construct this path together’, says Sabine MacDonald, Marketing Manager for LATAM and the Caribbean.

CHALLENGES WITH LOGISTICS

Carlos Wey, Service Centre Supervisor, also mentions the growth and excellent results obtained in Latin America and the Caribbean.

‘We have managed to overcome adversity and commemorate increased sales. We thank everyone for their understanding, especially with regard to international logistics, which have had an impact on the supply of products, particularly spare parts and accessories’, he says.
Being prepared, with available stock at the quality and quantity that clients need, has strengthened STIHL’s competitivity, also in the maintenance of our machines in the after sales service.

Carlos Wey, Service Centre Supervisor, thanks everyone for their understanding, and congratulates everyone on the results obtained

Online Training

Online training is an important tool, alongside on-site training, to pass on the knowledge necessary for the business to be successful.

STIHL believes that developing people is important to the business. Training enables your entire team, subsidiaries and importers, to develop skills and competencies that directly contribute to business results.

Due to training we aquire the necessary knowledge to be able to use the product, to learn the details of the equipment, refine our technical knowledge and learn the best way to pass on the information to our customer in an effective, safe and reliable way.

With the development of technology and the growing ease of access to the internet all over the world, distance learning is becoming more and more popular. This is the most appropriate system in the current situation and will certainly continue to be used in the future, both for those who are training and those who are learning.

STIHL is working towards meeting its commitment to ensure teams and trainers are fully trained, increasing the knowledge within the local distribution network. Look out for opportunities!

In person training is highly valuable, but with the current situation with the pandemic and with more changes still to come, the importance of on-line training is growing.
